Many people find developing and running websites to be both profitable and fun. It is a great way to exercise one’s creativity and also provides a good amount of independence. One of the hardest things about web development is coming up with the content to fill all those newly designed web pages though. When it reaches a point where you don’t have the expertise or free time to do the content yourself, you can either fill your site up with free articles that internet users can find all over the internet, or you can hire someone to write unique content for your site.
Hiring a writer is generally a good way to go. But, once you have found the writer that you want to use, once you are relatively sure they are not going to run off with your money and leave you empty handed, how much should you pay for written content?
If you look around at the various webmaster forums and writing services, you will find that writers are easily had for a wide variety of prices. It is important to get samples of writers’ past work so you have a better idea of what you are getting before you commit to a certain writer. For most general writing, you should be able to find a competent and skilled writer who is fluent in English for two to three cents per word. There are a great number of writers who offer their services in the one cent per word range (and sometimes even below that), but in content creations like everything else, you usually get what you pay for. Most of the cheap writers end up turning in projects that are in broken English and sometimes are even barely coherent. There are also people who take articles written by others and pass them off as their own, they can usually charge cheaper than anyone else as they aren’t really putting any time into it at all.
So, for well written general content, expect to pay any where from two cents to four or five cents per word. If you are looking for more technical content you may have to pay even more.
